The right backpack makes your adventure so much easier and more fun. Which backpack suits you depends on both your physique and what you plan to use it for.
Backpack capacity in liters
It's often better to have a backpack with more space that you don't pack full than a too-small backpack that is crammed. A backpack with gear strapped to the outside because there's no room inside can be difficult to carry if it becomes unstable from everything hanging and dangling.
- For day trips, a backpack that can hold 25-40 liters is good so you have room for rain gear, a warm sweater, and a packed lunch.
- For an indoor overnight stay during a weekend, a 35-50 liter backpack works well. Choose the larger volume if you need to fit a sleeping bag and sleeping pad.
- If you plan to hike and carry a tent/wind shelter, camping stove, food, and other shared gear, you will probably need a backpack that holds 50-70 liters for a 2-3 day trip.
- If you will be out for more than 4 days, we recommend a backpack of 65 liters and up.
- For backpacking travel, a backpack that holds 45-65 liters is suitable.
