The right backpack makes your adventure so much easier and more enjoyable. Which backpack suits you depends on both your physique and what you will use it for.
Backpack volume in liters
It's often better to have a backpack with more space that you don't pack full than a too-small backpack that is crammed. A backpack with gear strapped to the outside because there's no room inside can be difficult to carry if it becomes unstable from everything hanging and dangling.
- For day trips, a backpack that holds 25-40 liters is good, so you have space for rainwear, a warm sweater, and a packed lunch.
- For overnight stays indoors during a weekend, a 35-50 liter backpack works well. Choose the larger volume if you need to fit a sleeping bag and sleeping mat.
- If you're going hiking and carrying a tent/shelter, camping stove, food, and other shared gear, you'll probably need a backpack that holds 50-70 liters for a 2-3 day trip.
- If you'll be out for more than 4 days, we recommend a backpack of 65 liters and up.
- For backpacking travel, a backpack that holds 45-65 liters is suitable.
